The Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS) and the Broos Institute for Afrocentric Studies and Research are introducing Masters and PhD programmes in the Netherlands with a view to adding Afrocentric elements to the European education system.
MITDS is a private higher education institution in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The institution is affiliated to the premier public university in Northern Ghana, the University for Development Studies in Tamale, Ghana. It currently offers Masters and PhD programmes in Culture and Development.
In collaboration with the Broos Institute, students enroll in the Masters/PhD programs in MITDS with options for regular or modular streams. The regular stream means the traditional approach where students have to go to school full-time and attend lectures in person.
Students are required to take a certain number of modules or courses in a term. On the other hand, with the modular approach, students have the flexibility to take one course or module at a time, combining physical and virtual lectures and seminar presentations.
Target date: September 2025
The following courses are offered in the master’s programme:
- Introduction to Endogenous Development
- Introduction to Indigenous Knowledge and Ethnography
- Sociology and Society
- Philosophy of Science
- Culture and Diasporanism
- Cultural Studies
- African Philosophy
- Development Theory and Change
- Social Anthropology
To participate in the Master’s programme, applicants must have the required Bachelor’s degrees in the relevant fields.
For the PhD programme, applicants must have a research-based Master’s degree (e.g., MPHIL); those without a research-based Master’s degree must first complete foundation courses to meet the programme requirements. There are compulsory core and elective courses that everyone must complete, in addition to all supervised courses. These are offered in the form of modules or meetings. The minimum duration of the PhD programme is 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.
